Areas We Cover

Local tree surgeons working across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the wider East Midlands.

Where we work — Nottinghamshire and north-east Derbyshire

We are based at Shirebrook, on the Derbyshire side of the Nottinghamshire border between Mansfield and Bolsover. That puts almost everywhere we work inside a forty-minute drive, which is why we can usually reach a storm call-out the same day and why there is no call-out charge anywhere on this page.

Six districts, six different sets of ground conditions, and six different councils holding the TPO registers. The sections below set out what tree and hedge work actually involves in each one, and link to every area page we have.

How our coverage actually works

Most tree surgeons list every town within fifty miles. We would rather be straight about it, because how far we are from you genuinely affects both the price and how fast we can get there.

The core area is everything within about twenty-five minutes of Shirebrook: Mansfield district, Bolsover, north-east Derbyshire around Chesterfield, and the Bassetlaw side of Nottinghamshire. Same-day quotes, same-day emergency attendance, and small jobs are viable because we are not spending an hour each way.

The wider area runs out to Nottingham city, Newark, the Trent villages and the southern half of Amber Valley. Still no call-out charge and still usually a same-day quote, but a single small job that far out may be scheduled around other work in that direction rather than attended immediately.

Beyond that, we take contract and commercial work across both counties — grounds maintenance, site clearance, and BS5837 surveys for planning — where the size of the job justifies the travel.

Nottingham and the Boroughs

The city and the boroughs around it are our largest single area and the most varied. Victorian and Edwardian gardens in West Bridgford, Sherwood, Mapperley Park and The Park Estate carry trees planted between 1870 and 1910 that are now full-sized on plots that changed around them. Post-war Arnold, Carlton, Gedling and Bulwell are dominated by leylandii and privet doing the job of a fence. Beeston has large Victorian back gardens with mature limes and sycamores, and the Trent corridor at Clifton and Wilford brings shrinkable clay and subsidence questions into it.

Four councils hold TPO registers across this area — Nottingham City, Rushcliffe, Gedling and Broxtowe — and getting the wrong one means a Section 211 notice is not valid. We confirm which covers your address before quoting.

Mansfield District

Our closest working area, and the one we know best. Mansfield sits on Sherwood Sandstone — sandy, free-draining ground that is excellent for growing conifer hedging quickly and not especially good at holding a root plate in high wind. Windthrow here tends to take the whole tree over rather than break limbs out of it, which changes how a storm-damaged tree gets assessed.

The former colliery estates at Forest Town, Rainworth, Bull Farm and Ladybrook were laid out with continuous privet and hawthorn boundary hedging, much of it still standing and still running to hundreds of metres per scheme. Mansfield Woodhouse and Berry Hill have the older, larger plots with beech, yew and holly.

Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire

Chesterfield is split between two planning authorities and it catches people out constantly. The town, Brimington, Hasland, Newbold and Staveley are Chesterfield Borough Council. Wingerworth, Grassmoor, North Wingfield, Holmewood and Clay Cross sit with North East Derbyshire District Council despite having a Chesterfield postal address. Two TPO registers, two conservation area maps.

The ground is heavy Coal Measures clay with regraded colliery spoil and made ground under much of the eastern side. Trees on made ground root shallow and wide, and the back-to-back terraces at Hasland and Brimington frequently have no rear vehicle access at all, which is the single biggest cost factor on any job in this town.

Bassetlaw — Worksop, Retford and the Rural North

The most rural district we cover, and the work splits cleanly in two. Town gardens in Worksop and Retford want a clipped boundary. Ten minutes out, the hedge is a mile of hawthorn and blackthorn holding stock in a field, and it wants laying rather than cutting.

The Dukeries — Clumber, Welbeck, Thoresby and Rufford — spilled their planting well beyond the park walls, which is why ordinary suburban gardens here turn up yew, holly and beech of a quality you would not expect, sometimes with a cedar or Wellingtonia standing in the line. Retford adds three conservation areas including the 2022 extension, covering much of the Georgian centre and West Retford.

  • Tree surgery in Bassetlaw

District coverage on the Bassetlaw tree surgeon page, with dedicated pages for Worksop, where four conservation areas and Dukeries estate spillover shape the work, and Retford, where the conservation area boundaries are the first thing we check.

  • Hedges and field boundaries

Hedge trimming in Bassetlaw covers both garden hedges and traditional laying on native field boundaries around Blyth, Tuxford and the Idle and Ryton valleys — dormant-season work with Hedgerows Regulations to consider on removals.

Newark and Sherwood

Two very different landscapes under one council. The Trent floodplain through Collingham, Winthorpe, North Muskham and Farndon is deep alluvial silt — some of the most fertile ground in the county, where hedges put on noticeably more growth in a season and where flood-stressed trees fail months after the water has gone rather than during it. West of the A614 around Ollerton and Bilsthorpe it turns sandy and dry on the Sherwood fringe.

Southwell is its own case: the Minster conservation area over much of the centre, Georgian plots, and the Bramley apple heritage that left a lot of garden boundaries that are part hedge and part neglected orchard.

  • Tree surgery around Newark

District coverage on the Newark tree surgeon page, with dedicated pages for Southwell, covering Minster conservation area consents and Bramley orchard renovation, and Collingham, where floodplain windthrow and riparian work dominate.

  • Hedges and boundaries

Hedge trimming in Newark sets the cutting interval to the ground rather than the calendar, because a hedge on Trent silt genuinely needs cutting more often than the same species twelve miles west.

Amber Valley — Ripley, Belper and Heanor

Amber Valley is not flat, and that is the thing that shapes the work. Belper and Duffield run up the valley sides in terraces, often reached only by steps with a gritstone retaining wall at the boundary. Belper and Milford also sit inside the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site buffer zone, with conservation area status over much of the older town on top of that.

East of there, Ripley, Codnor, Swanwick, Somercotes and Langley Mill are built on and around former colliery workings, with regraded spoil under much of the post-war housing. Trees and hedges on made ground root shallow and wide, grow unevenly along a run as they hit better and worse pockets, and move more in wind than the same species on undisturbed soil.

Not sure whether we cover you?

Coverage — FAQs

  • Where exactly are you based?

Shirebrook, on the Derbyshire side of the border between Mansfield and Bolsover, postcode district NG20. That is deliberately central to the area we work: Mansfield, Chesterfield, Worksop and the Amber Valley towns are all within about half an hour, and Nottingham, Newark and Retford within about forty minutes.

  • Do you charge for travelling out to quote?

No. There is no call-out charge anywhere on this page, and quoting is free whether or not you go ahead. Most quotes are returned the same working day, and for straightforward work we can often price from photographs and rough measurements without visiting at all.

  • My postcode is not listed — will you still come?

Probably, and it is worth asking. The pages above cover where the bulk of our work is, not a hard boundary. We regularly travel further for larger jobs, contract work and commercial grounds maintenance, and we will tell you honestly if a small job is too far to be worth your money.

  • How quickly can you get to an emergency?

Within the core area around Mansfield, Chesterfield, Bolsover and Bassetlaw we are usually on site within hours. Further out towards Nottingham, Newark or the southern Amber Valley it depends on where the crew already is that day. For anything posing an immediate risk, ring rather than use the form — 07949 268926, any hour.

  • Do you work in more than one district on the same day?

Often, and it can save you money. If we are already working in your area we can usually fit a small job in around it. If you and a neighbour both want hedges cut, booking the same day is materially cheaper than two separate visits because the setup and clearing route are shared.

  • Do you cover commercial and contract work across both counties?

Yes, and we travel further for it. Grounds maintenance contracts, site clearance ahead of development, BS5837 surveys for planning applications, and scheduled tree inspections for schools, care homes, housing associations and commercial landlords. Fixed annual pricing, RAMS issued before attendance, £5 million public liability and 30-day invoice terms.

  • Which council do I need permission from?

It depends on the address rather than the postal town, and the two frequently disagree. Nottingham city addresses can fall under Nottingham City, Rushcliffe, Gedling or Broxtowe. A Chesterfield postal address might be Chesterfield Borough or North East Derbyshire. Hucknall is Ashfield, not Gedling. We confirm the right authority and search the right TPO register before quoting, at no charge.
