Why there is no price list
What actually drives the price
People expect tree work to be priced by height. It is not. The same tree in two different gardens can differ in price by a factor of three, and these five things — in rough order of impact — are why.
Access
Can a vehicle and chipper get alongside, or does every branch come through the house? A rear garden reached through a hallway can take three times as long for the same tree.
What is underneath
Over open lawn a tree can be dropped in large sections. Over a conservatory, garage or a neighbour's fence it is dismantled piece by piece on ropes — skilled, slow work.
Size, species, condition
Crown spread and stem diameter set the volume; dense hardwood is slower than conifer. Advanced ash dieback can make a tree unsafe to climb, forcing a platform or crane.
Waste disposal
Chipping and removing the arisings is a real cost. Some quotes leave it out — the most common reason a cheap price stops being cheap. Ours include full removal unless you want logs or chip left.
Council consent
A TPO or conservation area means the work cannot start until consent is determined — six weeks for a conservation area notice. We do the paperwork free, but it affects when the job can happen.
Five questions to ask
How to compare tree surgery quotes
If one of three quotes is dramatically cheaper, something is different. In our experience the gap is almost always one of these.
Is waste removal included?
Excluding disposal can make a quote look 20–30% cheaper and leave you with a garden full of cordwood. Get it in writing either way.
Is the stump included?
Felling and grinding need different machines. A removal quote that does not mention the stump is not including it. We price it as a separate, clearly marked line.
Are they actually insured?
Ask for the certificate, not the claim. £5 million public liability is the working standard, and employer's liability is a legal requirement if they have staff.
Have they checked for a TPO?
Unauthorised work on a protected tree is a criminal offence with an unlimited fine — and the liability sits with you as the owner too. Any competent firm checks before pricing.
Fixed price or estimate?
Day rates and estimates can move. Ask for a fixed written quote for a defined scope. If something changes the job on the day, we stop and agree it with you first.
Hedges and stumps
Hedge trimming and stump grinding prices
Both are priced per job rather than per metre, and both are cheapest when booked alongside other work or on a regular arrangement.

Hedge trimming
A routine annual cut reachable from the ground is the cheapest recurring work we do. The price rises with:
- Height beyond ladder reach, or depth that needs cutting from both sides
- Hard reduction into old wood after several missed seasons — beech and yew are staged over two or three visits
- Conifer runs over about twenty metres, or restricted access for taking arisings out
- Save by cutting annually, agreeing a fixed height and width, or booking neighbours on the same day

Stump grinding
Priced on stump diameter, the depth you need, and whether the machine can physically reach it. To price it we need:
- Rough diameter across the cut face — a photo with a spade in shot for scale is usually enough
- The narrowest point on the access route
- What the ground is for afterwards: 200–300mm suits turf and planting; building or replanting on the spot needs more out
- Save by grinding at the same visit as the removal, while the access is already set up. Buried brick or colliery spoil (common around Clay Cross, Manton and Pleasley) adds time
How we quote
Free, fixed, and always in writing
Free, with no call-out charge
Someone comes out, looks at the tree, checks access and the TPO position. No obligation — if you are collecting comparison quotes, we would rather be one of them than the only one.
A fixed figure, usually the same day
The quote lists the work, whether waste and stump are included, the TPO position, our insurance details and a fixed total. Nothing is added afterwards without agreeing it with you.
No price over the phone for a tree we have not seen
A price given blind is a price that changes. Two or three photographs and a postcode are enough to price most jobs within a few hours.
Pay when the work is done
No deposits on domestic work — you pay once the job is finished and you are happy with it. Commercial clients are invoiced on 30-day terms.

Tree surgery costs — common questions
Tree Surgery Prices — FAQs
How much does a tree surgeon cost in Nottingham?
It depends far more on access than on the size of the tree — the same tree costs very different amounts depending on whether a vehicle can get alongside it or every section has to be roped down and carried through the house. We quote free and in writing, usually the same working day, with the price fixed for the work described.
How much does hedge trimming cost in Nottingham?
Hedge cutting is priced by the job, based on height, depth, length, species and what happens to the arisings. A routine annual cut reachable from the ground is the cheapest recurring work we do; a neglected run needing powered access and hard reduction costs considerably more.
Why are tree surgery quotes so different from each other?
Usually because they are not quoting the same thing. Check whether waste removal is included, whether stump grinding is included, and whether the contractor has checked the tree's protected status — ask all three of every quote and the numbers generally start making sense.
Do you charge for a quote or a call-out?
No. Quotes are free with no obligation, and there is no call-out charge anywhere in our working area across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
Is the price fixed or could it go up?
Fixed for the scope of work described in the quote. If something comes to light on the day that genuinely changes the job — hidden decay, a service running where it should not be — we stop and agree it with you before continuing. We do not add items to the invoice afterwards.
Is stump grinding included in a tree removal price?
Only if the quote says so. Felling and grinding need different machinery, so we price the stump as a clearly marked separate line and you choose. Doing it at the same visit is cheaper than a return trip.
Does waste removal cost extra?
Not with us — full removal of timber, brash and chippings is included unless you ask us to leave it. Worth checking on every quote you get, because excluding disposal is the most common way a cheap-looking price stops being cheap.
Is it cheaper to reduce a tree than remove it?
Very often, yes — and it keeps a tree that may take decades to replace. A crown reduction usually solves the light, gutter and overhang problems people call about, at a fraction of the cost of removal plus stump grinding. We will say when reduction is the better option, even though it is the smaller job.
