About TB Tree Care
Delivering expert tree and hedge care across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire since 2023.
Meet Tom
The face behind TB Tree Care
People often see the business but not the person behind it, so here he is. TB Tree Care is run by Tom — the one who quotes your job, turns up to do it, and is the name in most of the reviews on this site. The person who priced the work is the person on the end of the saw, so nothing gets lost between the estimate and the day.
The business was built from the ground up. No shortcuts and no overnight success — just hard work, consistency and a commitment to doing things properly. Most of our growth has come through word of mouth, and that says more about the relationships we have built with customers than any advert could. Every customer matters, every recommendation is appreciated, and every job is a chance to earn the next one.
Behind Tom is a hard-working crew who make it possible to keep the standard up as the diary fills. We have been deliberate about not growing faster than we can staff properly. It means turning some work down, but it also means the same faces on each visit and a booked date that stays booked.
It has not always been easy, but we are proud of how far things have come and more motivated than ever for what is ahead. To everyone who has trusted us with their trees so far — thank you. That trust is the whole business.
Hardworking
Early starts, long days when the job needs it, and the site cleared before we leave rather than "we will come back for that".
Loyal
To the customers who recommend us, to the crew who turn up in the rain, and to the towns around Shirebrook where most of our work still comes from a neighbour of the last job.
Professional
NPTC-qualified, insured to £5 million, and honest about what a tree does and does not need — even when honesty costs us the job.

Where we work from
Being based at Shirebrook is not incidental. It sits on the Derbyshire side of the border between Mansfield and Bolsover, which puts Mansfield, Chesterfield, Worksop and the Amber Valley towns inside half an hour and Nottingham, Newark and Retford inside forty minutes. That is why we can answer a storm call-out the same day and why small jobs are still worth doing.

A truly professional service, fantastic knowledge and offers no obligation advice if you’re not sure what you need. Came and took an exceptionally large Laurel tree down for me, fully cleared and tidied, left my garden with so much more light (and sunshine when we get it) would definitely recommend.

What we will tell you that others might not
The honest advice is the part customers mention most in reviews, and it is the thing we would rather be known for than any list of equipment.
If a hedge cannot be saved, we say so before quoting.
Conifers carry no dormant buds in brown wood. Cut a leylandii below the green line and it never recovers. We would rather lose the reduction job than take the money and leave you with a permanent brown screen.
If a tree does not need felling, we say that too.
A crown reduction, a deadwood strip or simply leaving it alone and monitoring it is frequently the right answer, and it is always the cheaper one.
If the work needs council consent, we do not start without it.
Working on a protected tree without permission is a criminal offence carrying an unlimited fine, and it is the property owner who carries that risk, not the contractor.
If a job is too far away to be worth your money, we will tell you.
A small job an hour each way costs you more than it should and we would rather say so than pad a quote.

Qualifications, insurance and standards
NPTC-certified operatives
Certification across chainsaw cross-cutting and maintenance, felling to 380mm, aerial tree work using rope and harness, and aerial rescue. Certificates are available on request before work starts — ask us, and ask anyone else you are considering.
Insured to £5 million
£5 million public liability cover plus full employer's liability. Documentation available on request, and RAMS — risk assessment and method statement — issued as standard before attending any commercial, school, care home or contract site.
Work carried out to BS3998
BS3998 is the British Standard for tree work, and it is what separates a proper crown reduction from topping a tree and calling it one. Every pruning specification we write is to that standard, and we will explain what it means for your tree rather than just citing it.
Knowing the ground, not just the trees
Most of what makes a job go well or badly around here is not the tree — it is what is under it and who governs it.
Mansfield sits on Sherwood Sandstone, which drains fast and holds a root plate poorly, so windthrow here takes whole trees over rather than breaking limbs out. Chesterfield is heavy Coal Measures clay with colliery spoil and made ground under much of the eastern side, where roots run shallow and wide. The Trent floodplain at Collingham and Winthorpe is deep alluvial silt where flood-stressed trees fail months after the water has gone. Ripley, Codnor and Somercotes are built over former workings where growth is uneven along a single boundary.
The councils matter just as much. A Chesterfield postal address might be Chesterfield Borough or North East Derbyshire. Hucknall is Ashfield, not Gedling. Nottingham splits four ways between the City, Rushcliffe, Gedling and Broxtowe. A Section 211 notice served on the wrong authority is not a valid notice — so we confirm which one covers your address and search the right TPO register before we quote, at no charge.
Why that shows up in the price
A tree on made ground with a shallow, wide root plate is a different removal to the same species on undisturbed soil. A terrace with no rear access turns a morning job into most of a day. We would rather explain what is driving a quote than have you compare two numbers with no idea why they differ.
Where we work
Nottingham and the boroughs, Mansfield district, Chesterfield and north-east Derbyshire, Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood, and Amber Valley. The areas we cover page sets out what the work actually involves in each one.

In our customers' words
Thank you Tom for giving my tree a much needed hair cut. It's not been trimmed in years and now it's a lot more under control. Thank you xx
Rachael G.
Contacted TB Tree Care and after sending Tom some photos, was given a very fair quote for hedge stump removal. Arrived when he said and with his team did a great job. Got the work done quickly, friendly and helpful, and left everything really tidy. Would definitely call again. Thank you.

Fantastic service from quote to completion. Honest, helpful advice. Extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of tree care with a great understanding of customer needs and expectations. They took great care around the other areas of the garden and cleared all debris away. A great job done at a truly fair price. Would highly recommend.

Asked Tom for a quote to chop down 2 very large trees. Quote very reasonable. They arrived promptly and worked all day and cleaned up after they'd finished. Would highly recommend this company — Tom and the lads did a brilliant job.
Dawn C.
Tom and his team have done excellent work each time I have needed my trees trimmed or my garden relaid with new stones. The work has been carried out exactly as required to a high standard, with advice given when needed. The quotes have always been very reasonable and competitive. I have had no hesitation in using Tom on numerous occasions and would highly recommend.

How we work
Free quotes, no call-out charge
Quoting is free anywhere we cover, whether or not you go ahead, and that includes the TPO and conservation area check. For a lot of jobs a couple of photographs and rough measurements are enough for a firm price without anyone visiting.
Fixed written prices
What we will do, what it costs, what is included and how the waste is handled — in writing, before we start. No day rates that drift, no extras discovered halfway through, no charge for the quote.
The site left as we found it
Sheeting down before we start, arisings chipped and cleared as we go rather than stacked, paths and drives swept before we leave. On plots with no rear access we protect the route through the property and clear continuously.
Available 24/7 for genuine emergencies
Storm damage, windthrow, a failed limb over a drive or footway. Ring 07949 268926 at any hour. If it is not actually urgent we will tell you and book it in normally rather than charging out-of-hours rates.
