We assess the stump size, height and species, how the root plate is formed, the ground conditions, and how close the stump sits to walls, drains and boundaries. Species matters more than size: a sycamore or willow stump of the same diameter as an oak needs deeper grinding because it will throw shoots from remaining root material. We also check access width, because the machine has to physically reach the stump before anything else is relevant.

Underground services are the main risk in stump grinding, and a grinding wheel does not care what it meets. We check for water, gas, electricity, telecoms and drainage runs before starting, and look for buried construction material — flagstone, rubble and old footings are common on the made ground around Ripley, Somercotes and the eastern side of Chesterfield. Where a service route is uncertain we grind by hand-controlled passes rather than at depth.

It depends on access and the stump itself. Pedestrian narrow-access grinders fit through a standard 900mm gate and handle most domestic stumps in a terraced or town garden. Medium and heavy-duty hydraulic machines take large hardwood stumps where there is room to get them in. Tracked machines are for uneven, sloping or soft ground, which is most of the valley-side work around Belper and Milford. We confirm which one at quoting so there are no surprises on the day.

The stump comes out in progressive passes rather than in one cut, working across it to keep the machine stable and cutting steadily below ground level. Depth is typically 150 to 300mm below the surface, adjusted for species and for what the ground is going to be used for afterwards — turf needs less than a new planting hole, and a fence line needs more along the post positions. Lateral surface roots are taken out in the same visit where they will otherwise interfere with mowing or paving.

Grinding produces a surprising volume of chip mixed with soil. We can take it away entirely, spread it as mulch elsewhere in the garden, or level it back into the hole — say which you would prefer when we quote. Levelling it back is the cheapest option and fine if you are turfing, but it is not suitable ground for planting straight into, because decomposing woodchip locks up nitrogen for a season or two.

Considerably. Hardwoods such as oak, hornbeam and beech are dense and grind slowly, so the job takes longer but the stump is unlikely to regrow. Conifers grind quickly but their root systems spread much further than the stump suggests. Sycamore, willow, ash, cherry and poplar are the ones that matter most: all of them regenerate from remaining root material, so they need grinding deeper and wider or you get a thicket of shoots the following spring.

The root plate is the structural mass of roots directly under the trunk, and its shape determines how much grinding is actually needed. Buttress roots flare outward at the base and have to be taken back or they stay visible. Shallow lateral roots are what catch a mower blade. Some species put down a tap root that grinding will not reach, which is fine because a tap root will not sprout. We work out which you have before quoting, because it decides whether the job is an hour or half a day.

Yes, and not always more easily. Very soft decayed wood clogs the cutting wheel rather than chipping cleanly, and a hollowed core can collapse without warning and drop the machine. Fungal brackets or white mycelium sheets under the bark usually mean Armillaria — honey fungus — which indicates decay extending well beyond the visible stump and is a good reason to grind thoroughly rather than cosmetically, since honey fungus spreads to living trees nearby through root contact.

Typically 150 to 300mm below ground level, and we set the depth by what the ground is for afterwards. Turfing over needs the shallower end. Planting a new tree or shrub in the same spot needs the deeper end plus removal of the chip, because decomposing woodchip locks up nitrogen. A fence line needs deeper and wider along the post positions specifically, so tell us at quoting if one is going in.

Yes, once the ground is properly reinstated, but not straight into the grindings. Woodchip mixed with soil ties up nitrogen as it breaks down and will starve a new plant for a season or two. For planting we grind deeper, take the chip away and backfill with topsoil. If you are replacing like with like — a new tree where an old one stood — it is also worth knowing whether the previous tree had honey fungus, because that changes what will establish there.

Not if it is ground properly. Grinding removes the growth points at and just below the collar, which is where regrowth comes from. The species that catch people out are sycamore, willow, ash, cherry and poplar, which can shoot from lateral roots left in the ground rather than from the stump itself. On those we grind deeper and follow the main laterals out, which is why they cost a little more than an oak of the same size.

Yes, where it is safe and sensible to do so. Lateral roots running just under the lawn are the usual reason people ask — they catch a mower and lift paving. We take them back in the same visit. Roots running under a wall, a drive or towards a neighbouring tree are a different matter: cutting a structural root can destabilise something still standing, so we assess each one rather than removing everything on sight.

Yes, with the right assessment first. The risks are underground services and undermining a nearby foundation or wall footing, both of which are managed by knowing where they are before starting rather than discovering them mid-cut. Close to a structure we grind in shallower controlled passes and accept slightly less depth rather than risk it. If we think a stump genuinely cannot be ground safely, we will say so and explain the alternatives.

A single accessible stump on a lawn is the cheapest work we do; a large hardwood stump behind a house with no side access costs several times that, because the machine has to be walked in and the chip carried out. Quotes are free, and for stump work a photograph with something for scale next to it is usually enough to price accurately.

Not normally, because the tree has already gone. It matters in two situations: if the tree was subject to a Tree Preservation Order there may be a replanting condition attached to the consent that removed it, and if the stump sits inside a conservation area the same can apply.
