Honey fungus and why Nottingham gardens should not keep stumps
Nottingham''s older suburbs — Mapperley, Sherwood, West Bridgford, Beeston — have densely planted Victorian and Edwardian gardens where mature shrubs, hedges and specimen trees sit close together. That is exactly the environment in which honey fungus does the most damage, and a decaying stump is the reservoir that sustains it. Armillaria spreads through root contact and by black rhizomorphs through the soil, and it kills established shrubs and young trees rather than just rotting dead wood.
On top of that, most of what gets removed in this city — lime, sycamore, ash, cherry — suckers strongly from an intact root collar. Cut the stem off at ground level and the root system responds by throwing up new shoots, often across a surprising area of lawn and border rather than just where the trunk was.

How the Job Works
A stump grinder chips the stump and the upper root plate away in layers with a rotating cutting wheel. Nothing is excavated and nothing is pulled out whole, which is what makes it viable in a finished garden with planting and paving already in place.
Standard depth is 200–300mm below the surrounding ground, which is enough to lay turf, plant into, or build a surface over. If the intention is to plant a replacement tree in the same position we go significantly deeper and take out more of the root plate, because new roots establish poorly through a dense mass of decaying old ones.
Matching depth to purpose
Lawn and border use needs 200–300mm. A patio, path or shed base needs more, since remaining material decays and settles beneath it. Replanting needs the most of all. Tell us what the ground is for and we grind to that, rather than to a default figure.
Chippings — backfill or remove
Grinding produces considerably more chip than the stump appears to hold. We can rake it back into the void at no cost, where it settles over a few months, or bag and remove it and backfill with topsoil for a level, immediately usable finish.
Access on Terraced and City-Centre Plots
The question we are asked most often in Nottingham is not how much, but whether the machine can even get to the stump. On a Victorian terrace in Sneinton, Radford or Carlton the rear garden may only be reachable through the house or via a shared entry that turns a right angle.
Narrow-access grinders handle most of it. Where they genuinely cannot — a first-floor deck, a fully enclosed courtyard, a garden reached only through a neighbour''s property — we will say so at the quote stage rather than taking the booking and failing on the day. Smaller stumps in those positions can often be hand-excavated instead, which costs more in labour but gets the result.
What we need to know upfront
The narrowest point on the route in, whether there are steps and how many, and any tight turns. A photograph of the access is worth more than a description. That information is what lets us give a firm price rather than a range.
Protecting the route in
Where the machine has to cross a lawn, a hallway or block paving we use ground protection boards and floor coverings. Soft lawn will mark in wet weather regardless — we make that good before leaving rather than pretending it will not happen.
Do You Need Permission to Grind a Stump?
Generally no. A Tree Preservation Order protects a living tree, so once the tree has been lawfully removed the stump itself is normally outside the order. The important qualifier is that the removal must have been lawful in the first place — if the tree is still standing and protected, felling it needs consent before any grinding question arises. Nottingham makes this more complicated than most places because four authorities are involved: Nottingham City Council, Gedling Borough Council, Broxtowe Borough Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council, each with its own register. We establish which applies to your address as part of quoting.
Where the stump is still protected
Occasionally an order is drafted to cover the stump, or a consent for felling carries a replanting condition attached to the position. We check the wording rather than assuming, because getting this wrong on a protected tree is a criminal offence with an unlimited fine attached.
Replanting conditions
Where consent to fell came with a condition to replant, the new tree usually has to go in the same or a nearby position within a set period. That changes how deep we grind — you need the root plate out properly for the replacement to establish. Tell us if a condition applies.
Suckering, Regrowth and Persistent Stumps
If you are already cutting new shoots out of the same spot every spring, the stump is the cause and grinding is the fix. Suckering is driven from the root collar, so removing the collar is what stops it — cutting the shoots off as they appear treats the symptom and on some species actively stimulates more of them. Lime, sycamore, cherry, poplar and willow are the worst offenders in Nottingham gardens, and poplar and willow in particular will sucker across a wide radius, coming up through lawn and borders well away from where the trunk stood.
Wide-spreading suckers
Where poplar or willow suckers are appearing several metres from the stump, grinding the collar stops new production but the existing root runs still need dealing with. We advise on what is realistic — sometimes that is grinding plus patience rather than a single visit.
Grinding versus chemical treatment

Yes, for the stump itself — suckering is driven from the root collar, and grinding removes it. Where poplar or willow has already sent runs several metres out, existing suckers away from the stump may still appear for a while, and we will be straight with you about that when we quote.
