Two councils, mining ground and Victorian plots
Three things make removal work in Chesterfield different. The first is the planning split: Chesterfield Borough covers the town, Brimington, Hasland, Staveley and Wingerworth, while North East Derbyshire District covers Clay Cross, North Wingfield and Grassmoor. Two registers, two application processes, and one wrong assumption is all it takes to turn a routine job into an offence.
The second is the ground. Clay Cross, Grassmoor, Staveley and North Wingfield all sit on former mining land, and made ground over old workings gives poorer root anchorage than it appears to. The third is the plots themselves — the Victorian terraces around Brampton, Newbold and the town centre have mature limes and horse chestnuts in gardens with no drop zone and no vehicle access.

Felling and Sectional Dismantling
On the larger plots out towards Wingerworth, Grassmoor and the district villages there is often room to fell directionally — we cut a hinge, control the fall line and put the tree where we planned. It is the quickest and cheapest method when the space allows it.

Not every infected ash needs to come down straight away. A tree away from paths, buildings and roads, with limited dieback and no basal lesions, can often be monitored for another season or two. We say so when that is the case rather than quoting work you do not need yet.
TPO and Conservation Area Consent
Before any removal we establish which of the two authorities covers your property and check its register. Chesterfield Borough Council administers TPOs and conservation areas for Chesterfield town, Brimington, Hasland, Staveley and Wingerworth; North East Derbyshire District Council covers Clay Cross, North Wingfield and Grassmoor. Conservation area trees — including those around the Crooked Spire and several residential zones — require a Section 211 notice with six weeks' notice. Felling a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence carrying an unlimited fine, with replacement planting enforceable under sections 206 and 207 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
Finding the right authority
The boundary does not follow the lines most people expect, and properties on the southern and eastern edges of the town regularly fall under the District rather than the Borough. We resolve it from your postcode and confirm in writing which council we have checked with.
We submit the paperwork
Where consent is required we prepare the Section 211 notice or the formal TPO application, submit it to the correct authority on your behalf, and wait for the period to expire or the determination to arrive before starting. There is no charge for this — it is part of quoting properly.
