Sherwood sandstone, colliery ground and why Mansfield trees fail
Mansfield sits largely on Sherwood Sandstone — free-draining, easily worked, and not especially good at holding a root plate in high wind. Trees here often root shallower and wider than the same species would on clay, which is why windthrow in this district tends to take the whole tree over rather than break limbs out of it.
Layered on top of that is the coalfield legacy. Pleasley, Clipstone, Shirebrook and the eastern edge of Mansfield all carry made ground, spoil and old workings, and mature self-seeded birch, sycamore and ash have colonised a lot of it. Those trees look established but are frequently poorly anchored in material that was never meant to support them. We assess the ground as part of the quote, because it changes both the risk and the method.

Is it always necessary to remove the whole tree?
No, and we will tell you when it is not. A crown reduction often solves the light, the gutters and the overhang for considerably less money, and keeps a tree that would take decades to replace.
